How I Cut ISO 42001 Implementation Time in Half Using AI (Part 1)

If you’ve ever gone through a compliance audit, you know it’s usually a heavy lift. Recently, at Close It Out Consulting, I worked with a startup client to implement ISO/IEC 42001:2023 —the new international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems.
Historically, undertaking discovery and building out policies for a implementing a new standard from scratch would easily take around 3 - 9 months. But by leaning heavily into generative AI, I managed to cut that time down to just 1 month.
The process of using AI to streamline compliance is incredibly cool, but I learned very quickly that AI is only as good as the raw materials you feed it. Here is the exact 6-step process I used:
Identify the Stakeholders: Figure out exactly who in the company holds the keys to the AI system's architecture, risk management, and operations.
Draft Targeted Questions: Create a comprehensive list of questions to ask these stakeholders.
Conduct & Record Interviews: Use Gemini or some other AI notetaker to record and accurately transcribe these meetings in as much detail as possible (detail is key!).
Amalgamate the Data: Feed all the raw transcripts into Claude to synthesise the answers into one massive, cohesive, and super detailed context file.
Populate Documentation: Upload that context file alongside the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard, and a set of templates (see Part two of this blog series for these!) into a Claude Project and allow the AI to populate your core compliance documentation seamlessly.
While the AI did the heavy lifting in steps 3, 4, and 5, the absolute linchpin of this entire 30-hour workflow was Step 2: The Questions.
When you're dealing with Large Language Models, the "garbage in, garbage out" rule applies exponentially. If you don't ask your engineers, product managers, and leadership the exact right questions about their AI systems, Claude won't have the context it needs to write your policies. You’ll end up spending the 3 months you saved rewriting generic AI hallucinations.
Having a razor-sharp, highly specific set of interview questions tailored to the ISO 42001 framework guarantees that your interview transcripts contain the precise data points the AI needs to build audit-ready documentation later. The magic of AI in compliance isn't just about automation; it's about giving the AI the perfect puzzle pieces to put together.
Want to try this workflow yourself? You don't need to reinvent the wheel. I’ve put together the exact set of stakeholder interview questions I used to feed the AI and cut my client's implementation time hugely.
